Bluetooth: The Wireless Fix Nobody Asked For (But Everyone Uses)

Bluetooth has rewired how billions of people interact today.

Look around you. Wireless earbuds. A smartwatch. A car stereo that connects automatically the second you sit down.

Chances are, something within arm's reach right now is running on Bluetooth. It's become so ordinary that most of us never think about it. But this small piece of technology has a genuinely interesting backstory, and it actually wiped out the technologies that came before it.

Bluetooth was invented in 1994 at Ericsson, the Swedish telecom company. Engineers Jaap Haartsen and Sven Mattisson had a simple goal: get rid of the tangle of cables connecting phones, headsets, and computers.

Their breakthrough was something called frequency-hopping. It's a technique that rapidly shifts a radio signal between channels in a crowded frequency band. That's why Bluetooth connections stay stable even with Wi-Fi routers and other devices nearby.

Then there's the name. It has a strange origin.

Revolutionized modern technology

An Intel engineer named Jim Kardach was reading about Viking history when he came across King Harald "Bluetooth" Gormsson. Gormsson was known for uniting Scandinavia's warring tribes in the 10th century.

Kardach saw an obvious parallel. Here was a new technology trying to unite competing phone and computer companies under one wireless standard. The name stuck, and so did the logo, which is actually the king's initials written in ancient runes.

By 1998, Ericsson had partnered with IBM, Intel, Nokia, and Toshiba to formalize the standard. The first official specification launched in 1999. Adoption took off from there.

Here's the part most people don't realize: Bluetooth didn't just add something new to the tech landscape. It actively destroyed two technologies that came before it.

The first was infrared, or IrDA. It required devices to be pointed directly at each other, and the connection dropped constantly. Bluetooth made it obsolete almost overnight.

The second was wired serial connections, like RS-232 cables. These physically tethered devices together. Bluetooth replaced that entire function with a wireless signal.

Eliminated the use of rs232 cables

On the upside, Bluetooth launched the modern era of wireless personal devices.

Wireless earbuds. Hands-free calling. Fitness trackers. Smart home gadgets that talk to your phone. All of it runs on Bluetooth.

Part of the reason it won out over competing standards is that it's cheap, low-power, and works the same way across brands. You don't need a Samsung phone to pair with a Sony speaker. It just works.

But here's the catch: an always-on, easily discoverable connection is also an easy target.

Security researchers have identified several types of Bluetooth attacks over the years. Bluejacking lets someone send unsolicited messages to a nearby device. It's mostly just annoying.

Bluesnarfing is worse. It lets an attacker quietly steal data, such as contacts, photos, and calendar entries, straight off a device.

And bluebugging is the nightmare scenario. It can give a hacker enough access to place calls or read messages without the owner ever knowing.

Has had positive and negative impacts

Manufacturers have patched many of these vulnerabilities. But new exploits keep surfacing, especially as more devices, like doorbells and medical wearables, get Bluetooth built in.

There's also a quieter cost. Many Bluetooth earbuds ship with sealed, non-removable batteries. When they die, the whole product usually gets thrown away, adding to a growing pile of electronic waste.

Bluetooth was never meant to change the world. It was meant to get rid of some annoying cables.

Instead, it quietly rewired how billions of people connect with their devices every day, for better and, occasionally, for worse.

AI DISCLOSURE: This post was done using Claude, in which I asked it to research the history and impact of Bluetooth and create a 3-minute script on the research it compiled. Using that same research, I prompted Claude to take the information and create a 500–600-word blog post in a professional style writing setting.

Anti-War Voices Post

Anti-war has been a statement for decades in the U.S.

It's no secret that today's politicians are all heavily in favor of war.  As a nation I think it's important we speak up and be anti-war.

It goes without say that there is a lot of heavily anti-war voices out there in the world but the deeper question to ask is how come no one reports on the anti-war stance. My reasoning for why I think it's not heavily reported is because news outlets need war.

I say that because with war news outlets like Fox News and CNN can have consistent articles to draw viewers in and have what I would call a good story. I also think the government plays a role in trying to silence anti-war because the government itself doesn't want to waste its money.

Protest against wars

You think of how much the government spends in military funding and defense funding and without war it's essentially a waste of government spending. Another big reason is the fact that there's money being made off from wars when it comes to having to manufacture military weapons and bombs.

There are two websites that I had taken a look at one being antiwar.com and the other being the American Conservative both of these websites cover a lot about the war scene happening in today's world.

After looking at the pages and even taking a look at the different stories and how some even cover different countries it amazes me how much I actually knew. For instance, I didn't even know these websites existed until being told about them.

I say that because I believe the politicians and government don't make these known but instead lie about running on a peace ballot simply to get your vote. I believe the real reason as to why they say one thing but do the other is because really when war happens, they profit of the making of military weapons, and they don't want to see their defense spending be dead money essentially.

different ways to express anti-war

I think the people here hold the power though be more vocal about being anti-war we've seen how war can hurt innocent families and it brings me to a quote I heard from a song of when the rich wage war it's the poor who suffer.

I agree with that statement, and I think as citizens we have to speak our mind about being anti-war and doing everything in our power to push against it.

Privacy, Online & Off

It's important to know what information you are putting out there.

When talking about privacy it's very important to be aware of just how much privacy you have especially in today's world. The following blog post will contain my notes from a couple of TedTalks regarding privacy within the government.

First the most important thing you might ask is how does this affect you or your family members. The answer is very simple it greatly affects them even if you think it doesn't.

For instance, things like cell phone towers and license plate readers are used as mass collection devices that will track information on you specifically your movements. This type of information can help the government gain a detailed portion of how you act.

One of the videos we watched made a great connection on how it acts. If you use thinks like Facebook, Instagram, checking credit scores, or even checking your bank account your creating essentially what he called an electronic tattoo.

privacy may not really be private

Many people know tattoos tell stories well so can an electronic tattoo and the more things you consume or use the more electronic tattoos you are covering yourself with.

He used the saying that we would be close to immortality in that our electronic tattoos or profile will live far longer than we actually will.

One thing that really shocked me was how companies have been able to take privacy invasion and turn it into a business model. The first step is contract adhesion that is a contract in which the party holds all the power.

Secondly, and probably the biggest is data mining and this can be done many different ways through user generated which is things like giving out your personal information to simply making an Instagram post.

Another form of data mining is tracking malware that would refer to things like cookies on a website or temporary internet files.

Finally, the last form of data mining is deep packet inspection that can be things like stored email files, every bit of cell phone communication, keyword searching through your texts, emails, and phone calls.

Know how they use your information
All of this information can be used to create what they would call a digital dossier which is all the information they gathered on you and basically making a whole profile on you.

They use the tactic of behavioral marketing to also get you while it is a slight positive because it efficiently removes products that don't align with your interests.

The biggest and probably the scariest is the Third-Party Doctrine - is a legal rule that leaves us all vulnerable, when the first party voluntarily gives info to a second party, the first party relinquishes all control over third party downstream uses. This essentially allows second party to give your info to third parties in which they could sell if off to scammers, spammers or even criminals.

I've mentioned all this because it's important to know what you're sharing online because the information will always exist even if you try to delete it.

Eight Values of Expression

There are eight values of Free Expression.

There are eight essential values of free expression and today I will be talking about one that resonates with me the most and why I feel it is so important.

The eight values of Free expression are as follows: first is marketplace of ideas, second is participation in self-government, third is stable change, fourth is individual self-fulfillment, fifth is check on governmental power, sixth is promote tolerance, seventh is promote innovation, and the eighth and final one is protect dissent.

The value of expression I chose was the second one which is participation in self-government to me this is important and really resonates with me. Especially because of the things in today's world and how important it is.

For those who don't know what participation in self-government is, it's the idea that people who live under a political system should have a meaningful say in how that system is run. It's also said that people's participation represents far more than simply asking for opinions.

Protests give a voice

I say this is important to me because not only do I feel we should participate
in self-government,
but we can simply learn so much from participating it things about other people and I think also participating in self-government can tie in with a lot of the other different values of free expression.

It's also important to me because I see it as a way to keep the government in check by speaking out against things we don't agree with and giving the people a voice.

It also is important because it allows us to choose who we vote for in a candidate that aligns with your values. I think the basis of self-government being that the point of it is to give the people a voice in which can prevent a dictatorship.

Voting is participating in self-government
The reason this resonates with me is because of the different ways you can participate in self-government. The different ways can be from voting and elections, advocacy and civil society engagement and what I feel most important is by staying informed and educated.

In today's world there are many different ways in which you can be an advocate against the government whether it's through organizing campaigns and doing petitions or even speaking out about current events happening in today's world.

A great example of this is when people organize protests because of actions that have happened in the government, an example would be organizing a protest against the war in Iran or people going on online to speak out against the use of flock cameras.

The reason why I resonate with this one the most is just because of how today's world there's a lot of things that people disagree with and how the government has kind of strayed away from its core purpose and by participating in self-government we are actively making sure that they don't stray too far like with the upcoming midterms we hold the ability to change who will be representing us in the government even if it's not a large amount it's still significant enough to create potential change.
